Writing a quiet little blog like this one and feeling inadequate when reading other, bigger blogs is sort of like batting the tennis ball around for fun and then wondering why you don’t compare to the Williams sisters.
For months, I’ve been putting off posting photos from this baby shower I threw for some friends because I felt like, in comparison with the sea of every single perfect detail party photos out there, mine just looked kind of silly.
This was not a super elaborate party or an especially traditional one. The couple is Spanish and this was their first baby shower (well, and baby!), so they weren’t sure what to expect and didn’t have any unreasonable expectations. Those were all mine.
I finally decided to stop being silly and celebrate the day. We had a nice time. People had fun. It was a good little shindig to get ready to welcome an adorable child. My Flickr stream is now about 4 months behind and the baby was born in January. He and his mohawk keep getting bigger.

Somehow I managed to neglect to take a photo of the crepe paper pom poms, which I taught these guys to make and they expertly strung together into a lovely little festive pouf in the corner. The baby loves staring at them now.
I would imagine that this whole comparing and not stacking up business is tenfold for weddings. I feel a lot of the same shyness when it comes to my house – it does not have massive windows, lovely light, and shining hardwood floors like every single place you see on inspiring blogs. It’s a rental with crappy carpet like so many places, although it has its charms. And it’s real. It’s where I live.
It’s OK to celebrate those not-so-perfect things, too, and feel pretty happy about it all the same.
I like writing, photography, reading, music, design, typography, paper products, days in the seventies and sparkly snow, Spanish wine and cans of PBR. I spent a year in Córdoba, Spain, working as a

I’m so glad you posted photos! This baby shower looks adorable … I love the onesies strung along the wall – such a great idea! – and all the colorful cupcakes and cupcake flags
. Most importantly, it looks like the parents-to-be LOVED it. They look so happy and isn’t that really all that matters? I actually really appreciate seeing real festivities like this one. Perfect is so overwhelming.
This looks adorable! I love the onesies on the wall and the tiny flags – many thoughtful details. I always think the most important part of planning a party is how you made your guests feel – everything else is just a bonus.

Thanks, ladies. The onesies on the wall we eventually decorated at the party, so baby Lucas will have plenty of couture here in a month or two. Thanks to my cousin Kristin for a lot of good ideas.
And Jenn, you’re right, perfect is so overwhelming!
Looks like a lovely party.
I am glad you posted this, I like to see “real” things on a blog.
